Frosting can be packed with grains! If you purchase frosting that’s pre-made you’re dealing with corn syrup, glucose, corn starch, modified- food starch and other hidden grains!

If you make your frosting with standard confectioners or powdered sugar, you might think you’re in the clear and you’re avoiding grains. Surprisingly, corn starch is used in confectioners sugar!

Everyone deserves Pizza and Cake on their birthday and no one should have to miss out!

Grain-Free Ingredients

1 Cup Coconut Oil, softened

1 Cup Vegan Butter

3 Cups Pulverized Beet Sugar

1 Cup Cocoa Powder

1/4 Cup Coconut Milk

1/2 teaspoon Salt

Equipment

Stand Mixer / Electric Mixer

Mixing Bowl

Adjustable Measuring Cup

Grinder/ High Powered Blender (for grinding beet sugar)

Sifter (for breaking up clumps of sugar)

Decorating Tool /Decorating Bag Set

Enough With the Words, Let’s Break A Recipe!

Silky Chocolate Frosting

A Grain-Free Vegan Indulgent Chocolate Frosting

Equipment

  • Stand Mixer / Electric Mixer
  • Mixing bowl
  • Adjustable Measuring Cup
  • Grinder/ High Powered Blender (for grinding beet sugar)
  • Adjustable measuring spoons
  • Sifter (for breaking up clumps of sugar)
  • Decorating Tool /Decorating Bag Set

Ingredients
  

  • 1 Cup Coconut Oil softened
  • 1 Cup Vegan Butter
  • 3 Cups Pulverized Beet Sugar may use organic Confectioners Sugar
  • 1 Cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1/4 Cup Coconut Milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt

Instructions
 

  • In a stand mixer, mix the Coconut Oil until it is smooth and creamy.
  • Add the Vegan Butter and whip on medium speed, until the ingredients are smooth and creamy.
  • Add one cup of the Pulverized Beet Sugar, then mix on the lowest speed. Add 1 Tablespoon of Coconut Milk and mix until the frosting is creamy.
  • Add the second cup of pulverized beet sugar and mix on the lowest speed. If the frosting is crumbly, add a tablespoon of coconut milk. Mix the frosting until it is smooth.
  • Add the Cocoa Powder, Salt, and remaining milk. Mix until smooth.
  • Add the remaining pulverized beet sugar and mix until the frosting becomes silky.
  • If the frosting begins to separate or “weep” chill it for 10 to 15 minutes. Whip the frosting on medium speed for 2 minutes to get a fluffier frosting.
  • Frost your cake and enjoy!

Notes

Sifting your sugar will help give you a fluffier frosting.
Use a high powered blender to get a fluffy beet sugar.  
Add some Tapioca starch to your beet sugar to  give your frosting body when you mix it.  
If the frosting begins to separate or “weep,” return your frosting to the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes.  

A Slice Of The Grain-Free Lifestyle

You should have seen my face when I learned that confectioners’ sugar contained grains! I felt so betrayed!

I wanted to have cake on my birthday and after working so hard to create a Grain-Free Cake recipe, I was feeling sluggish, and awful. Unfortunately, I had been exposed to grains.

After problem solving my way through it, I learned that the confectioners sugar I used to make my frosting contained grains! Specifically, corn starch. My body hates corn.

After that, I started making my frosting with organic confectioners sugar.

If you’re wondering why I use pulverized beet sugar in this recipe–it’s because I want everyone to eat safely. Someone I love has a cane sugar allergy. I want everyone to be able to eat safely and have pizza and cake on their birthday.

Using pulverized beet sugar in this frosting helps me accomplish that goal! Now we can all have birthday cake together and no one has to miss out!

FAQ

Can I make the frosting ahead of time?

You certainly can! Cover and refrigerate the frosting for a day or two until you’re ready to use it. When you’re ready to use the frosting, whip it until spreadable with your stand mixer.

What if I don’t have a stand mixer?

You can make this rich delicious frosting with a hand mixer, but do so carefully. Add your confectioners’ sugar in small amounts and blend it thoroughly before adding more. However, without a stand mixer your frosting may take longer to make and it may not be as smooth as with a stand mixer.

How do I decorate my cake?

That’s a whole ‘nother blog post. I recommend a crumb coat of frosting. Next chill the cake for an hour or more. After the cake is thoroughly chilled, you can you can achieve the silky smooth finish to the frosting that you see in my birthday cake above.
