A Slice Of The Grain-Free Lifestyle

My first Grain-Free Independence Day was one I will never forget. At the time I was still eating almonds. I made an almond flour cake that I could enjoy and share with my guests.

I hosted the party, and made sure to prepare the old favorites: pasta salads, appetizers, cheese, crackers, and so many desserts! Most of the foods weren’t Grain-Free, but I had a few foods such as the almond flour cake I mentioned above, that I could enjoy.

One of my friends decided she needed to tell me how much she didn’t like the almond flour cake I prepared. I smiled, turned my back to her, and did some dishes. Inside I was screaming, “I’m doing the best I can. I can barely find anything to eat and you can’t leave my cake alone. Why do you have to criticize my cake, when you can eat anything you want? ”

It wasn’t the first comment someone had made about my food allergies, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. I’ve learned a lot since 2012 when my food allergies were discovered.

As hurtful as her comment was, she was however right! The cake wasn’t great. I had followed someone else’s recipe. I wanted cake, but I had to substitute for dairy, and eggs, and it wasn’t what I was hoping for.

The most important lesson I’ve learned since then is that everyone is happier when Grain-Free Allergy Friendly Food has the appearance, flavor, and texture of the food they’re expecting
